7 Questions that You MUST Ask Yourself Before, After, and During a Difficult Conversation

Here are 7 quick questions you can ask yourself before you engage in a difficult conversation to let you know whether or not the timing is right for you?

  1. Am I in a safe place (physically, mentally, and emotionally)?
  • If the answer is yes, proceed. If the answer is no, walk away.

2. Do I care enough about this topic to engage?

  • Also, ask yourself, why is it that you don’t care about the topic? (Check for biases)

3. Do I respect or care enough about the person I am speaking to in order to engage?

  • If the answer is yes, proceed. If the answer is no, you may want to consider walking away.
  • Also, ask yourself, why is it that you don’t care about this person? (Check for biases)

4. Am I in the right headspace to have this conversation?

  • If the answer is yes, proceed. If the answer is no, walk away. Remember if you’re intentional about it, in most cases you can always come back.

5. What is the outcome I am hoping to get out of this conversation?

  • To listen?
  • To be heard?
  • To understand?
  • If the answer is all of the above, then proceed. If it is not, consider walking away. Remember if you’re intentional about it, in most cases you can always come back.

6. How will having this conversation impact me/them?

  • If you come up with a positive answer, proceed. If you can’t find any positive reasons to stay in the conversation, you may want to consider walking away. Remember if you’re intentional about it, in most cases you can always come back.

7. What is impacting how I interpret this person’s intentions?

  • This is strictly a bias check. You can ask yourself this before, after, and during this conversation.
